Settle an expense
Saving a transfer records that money moved. It does not, by itself, cover what someone still owes on a bill. Open the expense and settle that payment so the covered amount moves.
Prerequisites
- The expense is saved
- You are signed in as the person who owes, when you are covering your own share
Steps
- Open the expense. Under Settlement Path, the amount still owed stays open until it is covered. Before any payment is applied, that section says No settlement links on this expense yet.
- If you already recorded a payment with that person, choose Use Transfer. On Settle, that payment is listed under From past transfers. Use Autoselect or Choose, then Settle.
- Or, on Settle, choose New transfer, enter the amount, pick a payment category, and choose Settle.
- Settlement Path then shows Settled or Partially Settled, and the covered amount.
A transfer you save on its own, and never settle against the expense, still leaves the bill open. See Record a transfer.
Add transfer on the expense form pays a merchant. It is not this step. See On an expense.
Remind someone
On a group, REMIND opens Send Payment Reminder. Custom WhatsApp Text opens WhatsApp. Send Anonymous Push sends a notification in Split Smarter. Reminding does not cover the amount.
What good looks like
The expense shows the applied amount as settled. Anything still unpaid stays as remaining.
