Glossary

Short definitions of common Split Smarter terms.

Memory

A Memory is an experience (for example a trip or event) with Personal, Group, or Shared scope. Expenses belong while it is turned on, not only because of the start and end you typed. On a bill dated today you choose which Personal Memories stay. Group and Shared Memories that are on are applied unless you turn them off first. Completing deactivates it and leaves links already saved. See Memories.

Place

A Place is a saved location. On an expense it is the Location of that spend. On a transfer it is a merchant’s branch. It is separate from a Memory. See Places.

Smart Ledger

The expense experience for logging shared and personal spend: who paid, who shares, a category, a repeating expense, and a receipt or a note.

Category

The label on a bill. Everyone sees the shared category unless you keep a different one on your copy. A category can sit under another category. See Category.

Debt Sync

Who owes whom after shared expenses. A transfer records that money moved. Saving it does not cover the bill. Settle on the expense does. See Settlements.

Transfer

A record that money moved between you and a person, or you and a merchant. On an expense, Add transfer pays a merchant and is saved with the bill. Use Transfer applies a person-to-person payment to what is still owed. See Settlements.

Budget

A spending cap for a stretch of time. It can cover just you, people you share it with, or a group. It resets daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. The start can be in the past. The end can stay open, or it must be today or later. Soft warns. Hard can refuse a new expense that would pass the cap. A Memory under What counts limits which spending counts. See Budgets.

Who paid the expense initially—not necessarily who owes the final share.

Sharers

People who share the cost of an expense.

Group

The shared place for one set of people: expenses, settlements, members, and budgets. The person who creates it is the admin. See Groups.

Relationship

The kind of connection, such as Friend, Family, or one you create. See Relationship and relation.

Relation

A relationship applied to one person. You choose it when you add them.

Custom contact

A person you add before they have a Split Smarter account. Linking them to their account later carries the history that used that placeholder. See Custom contacts.

Account

How you sign in. Signup uses email and a code, or you use Login with Google. Forgot Password? sends a reset link. A Hidden profile means other people cannot discover you. See Account & privacy.
