Create a trip memory

Use this flow when you and a group travel together. You create one Group Memory for the trip. Creating it turns it on for that group and turns off the Group Memory that was on before. Complete it when the trip ends so new expenses no longer use it.

Prerequisites

  • An active Split Smarter account
  • A group for the trip (or create one first)
  • The day the trip started, or the day it starts if that day is today

Steps

1. Create the Memory

  1. Open Memories for your account or from the trip group.
  2. Create a new Memory.
  3. Set a clear title (for example, the destination or trip name).
  4. Choose Group scope and select the trip group.
  5. Set the start to the first day of the trip. A past start is allowed. A future start is not.
  6. Set an end only if you know it. It must be today or a later day in your timezone, and after the start. If you have no timezone, today is a UTC day.
  7. Save. The Memory turns on from that start. If another Group Memory was on for this group, that one turns off.

2. Add photos (optional)

  1. Open the Memory you just created.
  2. Attach photos or other images that belong to the trip (cover moments, not every receipt—receipts go on expenses).

3. Confirm it is on for the group

  1. If the Memory is not already on for the group, activate it.
  2. Add a trip expense dated today and confirm this Memory is applied. To leave it off that bill, turn the Memory off before you save.

Details: Activate or switch memory.

4. Log expenses on the trip

  1. Add expenses as usual in Smart Ledger, with this group selected.
  2. On a bill dated today, this Group Memory is applied while it is on. Turn it off before saving if that spend should not count.
  3. On a bill dated on a past day, every Memory that was on at that time is attached, including this one if it was on then.
  4. A start in the past also links spending already saved in that stretch. That pass only adds links.

Details: Attach memory to an expense and Log your first expense.

5. Complete the Memory when you return

  1. Open the Memory and choose complete (or equivalent).
  2. Confirm the end date. It must be today or later in your timezone.
  3. Check that the Memory is deactivated and that new expenses in the group no longer use it. Expenses already linked keep it.

Details: Complete a memory.

What good looks like

  • Trip expenses saved while this Memory was on still show it.
  • After completion, the Memory is deactivated and is not applied to new expenses.
  • Photos on the Memory still describe the trip. Settlement and balances stay on the expenses themselves.
