Expenses (Smart Ledger)Paid by vs sharers

Paid by vs sharers

Paid by is who handed over the money. Split Between is who shares the cost. They can be the same people, or not.

For each person on an expense:

Net = amount paid − share

  • A positive net means they are owed money.
  • A negative net means they owe money.

Dinner

Alice pays ₹1000. Alice’s share is ₹400. Bob’s share is ₹600. Bob paid nothing.

PersonPaidShareNet
Alice₹1000₹400+₹600 (owed)
Bob₹0₹600−₹600 (owes Alice)

That is why the saved expense says Bob owes Alice ₹600. Paying the restaurant does not by itself mean Alice’s share was the whole bill.

On the expense form these are the Paid by and Split Between sections. The first time you set them is Log your first expense. How the debt is cleared is Balances and transfers.
