Category

The category on the bill

The category sits next to Location and the group when you add an expense. It classifies the shared spend. Everyone on the expense sees this category unless they set their own.

Your own category

You can keep a different category on your copy of the same expense. You see yours. The shared category on the bill stays what it was, and other people still see that one.

A category under another

A category can sit under a parent, and that parent can itself sit under another. The parent can be a built-in category or one you created.

Not a line item

A line item is one thing on the bill, such as a dish. A category is the label for the spend.

Break a bill into lines in Add line items. Set who paid and who shares in Split an expense.
